Health and Customs strongly support the proposed excise tax on Tongan tobacco

Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Inland Revenue and Customs together with Tonga Health fully support the initiative to impose for the first time the new excise tax on the Tongan tobacco commonly known as tapaka Tonga as more nicotine is found on it than the imported cigarettes.
Health Director Dr Siale ‘Akauola says during a program on Radio and Television Tonga the propose tax will help discourage smokers with the aim to promote a healthier lifestyle and environment for all.
CEO of Revenue and Customs Kelemete Vahe says the new tax if approved from Parliament is significant especially with collecting of tax for Government’s operations but most importantly helps people to make wise decisions and quit smoking because it will be more expensive.
The proposed excise tax is expected to be implemented in the next fiscal year.
