82 CERTIFICATE LEVEL 2 in CARPENTRY were presented this morning to those who successfully completed a 7-month construction training facilitated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints in partnership with Tonga Skills, MORDI Tonga and Tonga Institute of Science and Technology – TIST.
The principal of TIST – Talanoa Hafoka says, the program has contributed so much to strengthening the skills and capabilities of the participants in the field of carpentry.
The purpose of the training was to help participants build houses for families affected from cyclone Gita, help them become active in the community, find employment and to allow a pathway for further study in the field of construction.
Fakatouola Lafo’ou and Melikiano Tulanga from the program says, the training has helped them understand that there are other ways to earn a living and with the skills gained from the program, they can help build other houses using correct tools and resources.
Meanwhile, Australia’s High Commissioner to Tonga – Rowna McPhee talked about the benefit of the program for the participants.
“It’s been very good to learn this morning that already 50 percent of the graduated trainees from today have been contacted by outsiders for job opportunities or for further training opportunities so congratulations and well done. You’ve worked so hard to achieve your goals and now you’re on the way to seek your new career and business opportunities.”
The program was funded by the government of Australia through Tonga Skills.
