Report from Pacific Community will confirm if harvesting of sea cucumber will re-open

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 17/07/2019

The CEO of Fisheries Dr Tu’ikolongahau Halafihi says the harvesting of sea cucumber in Tonga is pending while awaiting a report from the Pacific Community – SPC following a survey in the waters of Ha’apai, Vava’u and Tongatapu.

The purpose of the survey was to provide information on the status of sea cucumber populations and to evaluate whether stocks have recovered since the ban of harvesting of sea cucumber was imposed in 2013.

He adds the Ministry has been working with a company from Hong Kong in farming sea cucumber with hope to recover following the decline from overfishing.

The issue was raised following the request from Ha’apai’s noble representative to Parliament Lord Tu’iha’angana during the island’s Royal Agricultural Show yesterday.
