(TASANOC denies) Tonga has not submitted bid to host 2027 Pacific Games – TASANOC

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 17/07/2019

Earlier this week foreign media had reported Tonga was putting its hand up to host the 2027 Pacific Games but this morning Tonga Sports Association and National Olympic Committee, TASANOC (which also serves as the Tonga Pacific Games Association, PGA) has denied these reports.

TASANOC made a statement this morning denying reports by foreign media and social media about Tonga submitting a bid for the 2027 Pacific Games and said that to lodge the bid, the office of the Tonga PGA must have full support of the Government of the day.

However the Minister of Internal Affairs, responsible for Sports – Saia Piukala says there was no mention of Tonga expressing interest for hosting the 2027 at the Pacific Islands Sports Ministers Meeting he attended before the Pacific Games kicked off in Samoa.

In their statement TASANOC said the preparation work and logistic is not a small thing and it takes months or years of preparation before it is finalized and tabled with the Board of TASANOC as well as endorsement by Government and finally submitted to the Pacific Games Council (PGC).

The PGC has awarded the right to host the Pacific Mini Games in 2025 to Palau during the General Assembly in Apia last Sunday. For the 2027 Pacific Games, PGC would open invitation and would like PGA’s/countries to table their interest and bid to be decided in next year General Assembly or latest in early 2021.
