The Ministry of Revenue and Customs this morning welcomed the Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation – WCO – Kunio Mikuriya on his first trip to Tonga.
The CEO – Kelemete Vahe says this is the first visit from a WCO Secretary General to Tonga which is a good opportunity to further promote WCO, of which Tonga has been a member since 2005.
During Mikuriyas three-day visit meetings have been arranged with the Prime Minister, the finance minister, and other ministries cooperating with the customs division, where discussions will be focused on important issues for customs duties here in Tonga including border security, particularly with the rise of drugs being secretly shipped into the country.
The CEO Kelemete Vahe says that there are several other world organizations that our people are aware of but not so much for the WCO. This visit from the Secretary General is an important opportunity to encourage Tonga’s Customs division reaching international standards.
