NCDs claim more than 500 lives annually in Tonga

Health Director says Non Communicable Diseases – NCDs claim more than 500 lives a year in Tonga.
This figure was revealed during a one-day workshop held by the Ministry last week with related stakeholders on National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases from 2015-2020 and onwards to 2025.
Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola says there is a significant increase in the number of people with NCDs and they are trying to address the issue immediately.
“Not only that, but they are carrying out campaigns to inform people on what they should do to reduce NCDs in the country.”
Non-Communicable Diseases includes high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, stroke and other diseases.
Dr ‘Akau’ola emphasized the importance for people to exercise daily and eat healthier foods such as fruits and vegetables.
Dr ‘Akau’ola adds, consuming too much alcohol and tobacco, eating unhealthy foods can lead to NCDs.
