Tongan culture and tradition are important to our people especially for those living far away from Tonga. For the Tongan community in Portland, Oregon in the United States last week celebrated Tonga Day with the theme – Working Together. Kolini Fusitu’a from the Portland Tongan Community said this theme highlights the need for the community to work together and not just within the Tongan community, but with the other ethnic communities in Portland.

Fusitu’a says programs such as Tonga Day are a festive occasion for the community and they hope to keep the culture and tradition alive for the younger generation. There are about 900 Tongans in Portland, according to Fusitu’a who says the Tongan community in Portland began in the late 70’s. This is the 3rd year of the Tonga Day celebrations in Portland and the Tongan community and organizers are looking to continue this program for the future.
