45 buckets of salted beef destroyed in Vava’u

The Food Division in Vava’u destroyed 45 buckets of salted beef on Friday as they were no longer fit for consumption but were still on sale.
Officer from the Food Division Sekilini Havili says the buckets were about 15-20kg each and were taken from Asian and Tongan shops following a complaint from a customer from Leimatu’a about the quality of the salted beef.
Staff from the Division investigating the case and verified the meat was no longer suitable for consumption and no labels were on the buckets to identify the type of meat and expiry dates, as required on the Food Act.
The staff are encouraging the public and consumers to contact or report any similar cases to the nearest Food Division if they are in doubt of any food items purchased from local shops.
