Constituents of Tongatapu 1 express dissatisfaction over not being represented in parliament for the upcoming PM election

The constituents of Tongatapu 1 has express dissatisfaction over not being represented in Parliament for the upcoming Prime Minister election. This was after their representative to parliament who was also the PM – Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva passed away few weeks ago vacating the seat.
Yesterday, a petition from the constituents was submitted to parliament with about 170 signatures. Speaking to Radio and Television Tonga News – Dr. Netatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua from Tongatapu 1 said, it is understood that the decision made to elect the new prime Minister is legal and constitutional but they wish to raise their concern as they have the right to have a voice in this very important process which is electing the head of the government.
Dr. Taufatofua added, they are aware of the urgency to elect a PM – for government’s operation not to be in limbo, they are also aware that the by election have to be properly arranged so they hope that authorities will take their concern into consideration.
Netatua concluded that this is the first time for such to happen here in Tonga, the passing of a PM and MP while still on the post – and our constitution and law will be tried this time, and with ideas throwing in such as their concern – they are hoping that there can be amendment to our law for the benefit of the country as a whole.
Constituents of Tongatapu 1 expressed dissatisfaction – after Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, Lord Fakafanua, issued invitations to all elected Representatives of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, calling for submission of nominations of an elected Representative to the Legislative Assembly as a candidate for Prime Minister Designate.
Acceptance for Nomination(s) for Prime Minister Designate acceptance of nominations will close on Thursday 26 September 2019. The Speaker will open and read out nomination(s) on the day of the meeting of all elected Representatives to the Legislative Assembly of Tonga to elect the Prime Minister Designate. The date of that meeting will be announced following the close of the period for receiving nominations. The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will preside over that meeting.
