Four members of the pro-democracy party known as PTOA defect from the party, as submissions for Prime Minister election close. The PTOA party was led by the late Prime Minister of Tonga, ‘Akilisi Pohiva.
Speaking to Radio Tonga News a reliable source says, the four defectors did not support the candidate the members of PTOA nominated.
These four include the Minister of Finance and Planning, Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, Justice Minister Vuna Fa’otusia; the member from Vava’u 16, ‘Akosita Lavulavu; and the member from Niua, Vatau Hui.
Radio Tonga News was told by one of the four that they are not opposing the Party’s vision but they believe that putting forward a different candidate for prime minister is in the best interest of the country.
Meanwhile, two nominations for the Prime Minister designate have been submitted by elected MPs to Parliament.
Today is the final day for nominations of candidates for the election of a new Prime Minister to replace the late ‘Akilisi Pohiva.
The election of the new prime minister is expected to take place during the sitting of Parliament next week.
