Despite Tonga contributing very little to the climate crisis, a group of youth climate warriors are still determined to play their part in pushing for climate action in Tonga.
Today is the last day for the Climate Change week held by the Makatolo ‘a Maui Youth from Haveluliku and the 350 Tonga group – known as the September Movement. This movement included several programs over the past week, from raising awareness in their communities to taking action against climate change.
These included a No Car Day aimed at minimising the amount of carbon released by vehicles into the atmosphere and also a No Gas day, planting trees in their villages, and clean-up activities at the beaches.
Taniela Paea from 350 Tonga says climate change is an important issue because the survival of our islands is in the balance, and everyone is concerned but the youth more so, because they are the future of our country.
The September movement wrapped up this afternoon with youths in Tonga, joining many youths around the world in a climate strike, urging leaders to take further action to protect our islands from climate change.
