PM marks beginning of construction of schools affected in TC Gita

Prime Minister Hon Rev. Dr. Pohiva Tui’onetoa marked the beginning of the reconstruction of schools damaged in Tropical Cyclone Gita last year in GPS Navutoka yesterday.
During the program, Prime Minister Pohiva Tu’ionetoa said, this reconstruction is unique because these school buildings will be constructed to withstand a category 5 tropical cyclone and further negative impacts of climate change.
This reconstruction program to all 30 schools damaged by TC Gita are divided into 3 groups and this project starts with Group 1 which are schools in extreme need of classrooms for the children namely – GPS Navutoka, GPS Fasi, GPS Vaini.
After GPS Navutoka was damaged in TC Gita the students had to continue their education at the Latter Day Saints chapel in Navutoka and will continue there until reconstruction is complete – estimated to be around August 2020.
These reconstruction projects – worth 17.31 million US dollars, are funded by the Pacific Resilience Program – PREP and Australian AID.
Also attending this ceremony the Prime Minister, Minister of Education and Training, Minister of MEIDECC, Ambassador of Australia and other guests.
