Address Mental illnesses to prevent suicide

The head of the Psychiatric Ward of Vaiola Hospital – Dr Mapa Puloka during the World Mental Health Day yesterday highlighted the importance of helping those with mental illnesses to reduce the risk of them taking their own lives.
The theme for this year’s program was – Suicide Prevention, an issue that Dr. Mapa Puloka says is increasing in Tonga.
Dr. Puloka says, it’s important to assist those suffering from mental illnesses, especially those with depression. He says – depression in Tonga is at nearly 90% of the population and mostly caused by the abuse of drugs.
Also speaking at yesterday’s program – an advocate for mental health – Kofi Moala says – people’s mental state need to be healthy in order for them to properly do their work.
Meanwhile, Minister of MEIDECC – Poasi Tei highlighted the importance for everyone to work together to help those with mental illness.
This program is marked on October 10th every year.
