Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 25/10/2019

The Acting Prime Minister – Hon. Vuna Fa’otusia has confirmed- they will still carry out public consultations on hemps seed despite the preparatory committee for the national consultation’s disagreement to continue with the consultation.

Yesterday, during a roundtable discussion on the issue, members of the committee stated reasons on why they shouldn’t proceed with the public consultation – and one was because hemps is a banned substance here in Tonga.

The committee includes the Attorney General, Chief Secretary and Secretary to cabinet and CEO from the Ministries of Agriculture, Internal Affairs, Health, Trade, Customs, MEIDECC and the Police Commissioner.

However, speaking to Radio Tonga news this morning – Vuna Fa’otusia says, the request from the Brown Group was done in a professional manner as they revealed their plans to Cabinet.

Fa’otusia adds, the reason why cabinet approved the request is because they believe – the Brown Group should be given a chance to carry out a public consultation regarding their plans, also elaborate on the beneficial of hemp seeds.

Fa’otusia also says – the Cabinet will finalize the issue according to the people’s wants – if they agree then the work will begin BUT if majority does not agree, then the issue will have to wait.
