8 youth charged over the weekend for public disturbance

The Ministry of Police over the weekend charged 8 students for their involvement in school brawls in Nuku’alofa.
Information from the Ministry of Police states – the 8 students – includes students between the ages of 15-21 years old from Liahona High School and Tonga College.
The incident happened after the celebration of Tonga College’s school anniversary on Saturday.
Of the 8 charged – 5 of them are students of Liahona High School and 3 from Tonga College.
Police says the cause of the brawl occurred at the One-way road between students from these two schools and during the incident – students from Tonga College ran for their lives where they were able to make it safely to the police station in Nuku’alofa.
Radio Tonga news is awaiting information from the Police regarding any injuries that occur from the incident also to confirm whether the students charged are still in police custody.
Meanwhile, police also charged 12 others on Saturday evening for fights during the float carried out in celebration of Tonga’s win against the Great Britain Lions on Saturday.
Police confirmed those charged were all under the influence of alcohol.
Police are now working to temporarily block the use of roads in Nuku’alofa for a float at the upcoming test match this Saturday between Tonga and Australia – all for safety reasons and to limit any further injuries.
