Dental Ward working on fixing dental compressor
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 30/10/2019
The Dental Ward at Vaiola Hospital is operating without a dental compressor due to an issue with a part of the machine.
The Chief Dental Officer – Dr. Amanaki Fakakovikaetau said they have contacted the Japanese manufacturer – Yoshida and are awaiting their quotation and the process that will follow as there are no spare parts available in Tonga.
The dental compressor at the ward was part of the new equipment fitted when it was opened in 2012 and Dr. Fakakovikaetau says there hasn’t been any issues with the machine until now. He says they are concerned with trying to fix the equipment themselves in case they further damage the 300 thousand US dollar equipment.
However, they have acquired some parts that they are looking to try out by this weekend to see if it can make do until the manufacturer gets back to them.
In the meantime, they are trying to cater to the public as best they could with their current equipment available but the chief dental officer says at the same time their clinics at the Health Centers in Nukunuku and Mu’a are still in operation and can carry out the dental work that is currently unavailable at Vaiola.
Dr. Fakakovikaetau said this was an unfortunate issue as there are several patients who have had to wait or travel further out of town to the Nukunuku or Mu’a health centers but they are trying to do what they can at the moment until a replacement for the part arrives and the compressor can be fixed.
