Police arrest 36 over the weekend

With 4 international rugby and rugby league matches over the weekend, the police were well prepared to maintain the peace in the Nuku’alofa Central Business District, arresting and charging 36 people for drunk and disorderly behavior in a public place during their operations on Friday until early Sunday morning.
The week before Police had made 12 arrests after a brawl broke out in downtown Nuku’alofa following different celebrations that took place on that day. Police then announced road barricades would be set up in areas downtown in preparation for the matches last Saturday.
On Friday evening police arrested seven for drunkenness and disorderly conduct in public places.
On Saturday, 29 people were arrested during and after the Tonga Invitational XIII rugby league team won against Australia.
Police confirmed that their usual operations in ensuring the safety and security of the public is still on going.
