Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 06/11/2019

There is only 1 week left until registration of voters for Tongatapu Constituency 1 closes on the 14th of this month and the Electoral Commission are still seeing Tongatapu 1 constituents registering to vote in the by-election.

Information from the Electoral Commission says they are still receiving application from citizens registering to vote in the Tongatapu 1 by-election.

The last election in 2017 saw about 4,206 people registered to vote while only 2,734, just a little over half, took to the polling stations.

Voters of Tongatapu Constituency 1 are set to vote in the by election on the 28th of this month for a representative to parliament to replace the late ‘Akilisi Pohiva. The only 2 candidates in the by-election are Dr. Netatua Taufatofua and Siaosi Pohiva.

There are several polling stations set up not only in Tongatapu 1 but also in the outer islands to allow for Tongatapu 1 constituents to vote. However there are no options for early voting or voting online from abroad, for the constituents who will not be in Tonga at the date of the by-election.
