Dr. Reynold ‘Ofanoa – Tonga’s Public Health Chief Medical Officer this morning confirmed – to date – the Ministry have confirmed 3 cases of measles with 177 suspected cases.
Dr. ‘Ofanoa said, majority of the patients are between the ages of 10 to 19. He added, there’s a slight decrease in the number of patients visiting Vaiola with the virus’s symptoms but it is still important for the public to be more cautious especially parents – as infants and pregnant women are vulnerable to this virus.
The highly-contagious virus has now spread to the Pacific region from the New Zealand 2019 epidemic, with Tonga following Samoa’s recent declaration of an outbreak. In Samoa a two-year-old boy, died of suspected measles a week ago, and his family is now also mourning the death of his one-year-old sister, who is also thought to have died from the virus.
