The foreign trade statistics for the 3rd Quarter of 2019 recorded a trade deficit of 126.3 million compared to the trade deficit of 147 million from the second quarter. Information from the Statistics department confirmed that the deficit for the 3rd quarter was the result of an excess imports of 139.4 million over export of 131.1 million for the period of July to September.
The principal domestic quarter was fish, which accounted for 19.8% of total domestic exports, followed by Kava at 21% and root crops with 10% and together they comprise of 70% of domestic exports.
The direction of trade – Imports were mainly from NZ, US, China and Fiji, while the exports were mainly to NZ, USA, Korea and Australia. It is understood from the data that Singapore and China are two out of 4 countries that are mainly importing it’s produce to Tonga and the 2 countries aren’t in the 4 top countries that Tonga exports it’s produce and items to.
Radio and Television Tonga News is still trying to contact the Statistics department for clarification on the issue.
