Pilot project aimed at improving Hihifo district water system

Hihifo District will now be able to address the issue regarding their water system – with assistance from the Global Environment Facility of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Last week, the Ministry conducted a pilot project to identify villages whose water system are being affected also villages that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change including villages in the Western area of Tongatapu.
The project coordinator – Silia Leger says, the aim of the program is to test the current situation of the water system and will be carried out in Fo’ui, Ha’avakatolo, Kolovai, ‘Ahau, Kanokupolu and also Ha’atafu.
Meanwhile, People’s Representative of Tongatapu 6 – Losaline Ma’asi says, it is important to check the first priority of the project which is to inspect the villages that are vulnerable to the water problem in order to adress the issue.
The project is funded by the Global Enviroment Facility to 14 countries in the Pacific including Tonga.
The project is expected to complete by 2021.
