Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 19/11/2019
The chairman of the ICT board – Piveni Piukala this morning responded to recommendation from the PM – to suspend 3 staff of Tonga Broadcasting Commission pending investigation to complaints received from the public. The 3 staff includes 2 journalists – Vilisoni Tu’iniua, Salamo Fulivai and the Station Manager – Setita Tu’i’onetoa.
Piukala to Radio and Television Tonga News this morning, he received a letter from the Minister of Public enterprises who’s also the PM regarding the matter on the 28th of October. A board meeting was then called – where board members considered the issue serious. However according to Piveni the complaint was there but there was no evidence or merit in the allegations stated in the PM’s letter to suspend the 3 staff.
Piukala said, they send a letter on the 11th of this month to Hon. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa and the Chief secretary to provide evidence and to be more specific with the allegations made in order for the board to make a move.
Radio and Television Tonga News has been contacting the Prime Minister and Edgar Cocker for a comment on the issue but to no avail.
