Health Officials have vaccinated more than eleven thousand people against measles since the outbreak last month.
Dr. ‘Ofa Tukia from the Ministry of Health says, health officials visited schools and communities for free vaccination against measles. As of yesterday afternoon, Health Ministry recorded 380 cases of measles in Tonga and most of the cases are teenagers between the ages of 10-19.
Dr. ‘Ofa Tukia adds they are working closely with the related stakeholders especially the churches to cancel large gatherings to avoid spreading the virus.
One of the major events scheduled for this Saturday was the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Catholic Youth Diocese of Tonga and Niue, however due to the outbreak the one-week program has been cancelled.
Thousands of Catholic youth from the region and abroad were scheduled to be in Nuku’alofa for the celebration.
Dr. ‘Ofa Tukia reminded the public the decision was based on health and safety purposes.
