Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 5/12/2019
The Ministry of Health has recorded only 46 new cases of measles in Tonga since last Tuesday. This brings the total number of cases to 440 since the outbreak last month.
During a televised program from the Ministry of Health Dr Joseph Takai says despite the new cases recorded recently, they’ve noticed a decrease in the number of new cases reported to Vaiola compared to the cases recorded since October when the outbreak of measles was declared.
The average figures since the outbreak was around 80-100 cases, but just last week only 46 new cases were recorded by health officials.
Meanwhile, Sr Afu Tei also confirmed with the public that no medical record is needed to verify vaccination against measles for passengers travelling to New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.
However, Health officials are strongly urging the travelers between the age of 10-24 to get vaccinated before travelling.
Meanwhile many sports competitions have been cancelled including football competitions scheduled for this year due to the outbreak and also the program for the Youth Parliament has been announced to postpone for next year.
