15,124 people vaccinated against measles in Tonga

The Ministry of Health have vaccinated 15,124 against measles in Tonga since the outbreak was declared in October.
The total number of vaccinations administered in Tongatapu is 10,371, in Ha’apai 1,121 people have been vaccinated, 823 from ‘Eua, health officials vaccinated 2,560 in Vava’u and 158 people from Niuatoputapu.
Since the outbreak, no cases of measles have been reported from the island of Niuafo’ou.
The Ministry of Health has received 13,000 of MR vaccine from the UNICEF following a request due to the amount of vaccines available locally.
Spokesperson from the Ministry of Health says, despite the drop in the number of new reported cases of measles they are still strongly advising and encouraging the most vulnerable age group to get vaccinated, especially when travelling overseas.
Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the outbreak at the moment and working closely with related stakeholders to cancel and postpone mass gatherings that could help spread the virus.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Health has also confirmed that the most popular women’s sports event for the month is still running despite the outbreak.
From our neighbouring country Samoa, the latest update this morning, 63 people have died from measles.
