Standard and Quality of Literacy and Numeracy a concern to the Ministry of Education

The Minister of Education is concerned over the standard and quality of Literacy and Numeracy in secondary schools.
The Minister of Education Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni raised concern over the standard and quality of Literacy and Numeracy in the secondary schools, after the result of last year’s Secondary Entrance Examination was released.
Hon. Sovaleni during a press conference said, from the 2885 students that sat this year’s examination, only 48 % of the students passed.
Students sat four Subjects which includes English, Mathematics, Tala ‘o Tonga and Science.
The Passing rates for each subject – English 26%, Maths 34%, Tala ‘o Tonga 72% and Science 56%
Sovaleni said the trend’s almost the same during the last five years.
However, the Ministry is now looking at solving contributing factors such as resource, standard of training of teachers, parents’ contribution from homes.
