Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 13/12/2019

The Director of Health says cancellation of mass gatherings highly contributes to the drop in the number of measles cases recorded in Tonga.

Dr Siale ‘Akauola says the latest report on measles shows, the cases have reached 476 in Tonga and new cases were only recorded in Tongatapu with 28, Vava’u with four new cases and another four new cases of measles in ‘Eua.

He also confirms with Radio Tonga News that no cases of measles have been recorded in the island of Niaufo’ou.

Dr Siale adds despite the decrease in the number of new cases reported to the Ministry of Health, he is strongly urging the public to be more cautious as Tonga is currently facing the outbreak of measles.

He hopes the mass gatherings will continue to cancel as it helps with their operation and especially more people are traveling in and out of the country.

Ministry of Health is continuing to vaccinate children between the ages of one to ten.

Most of the cases recorded in Tonga are patients between the ages of 10-24.
