The government is only allowing those who has received health stickers from the Ministry of Health to sell tobacco from their homes. This is one of the issues the Ministry of Health is putting a special emphasis on this year.
A tobacco officer from the Ministry – Le’omolotu Havea highlighted the need for those selling Tongan tobacco from their homes to get the health signs regarding tobacco from the Ministry before they can continue with their business as they could be fined $200 under the law.
Havea says, they are concerned because of the impacts smoking has on people’s health.
Havea understands there was a decline in the charges last year to those smoking in public places but they are looking at imposing similar charges on those smoking at chapels and kava drinking places.
Le’omolotu hopes the public would continue to cooperate with the Ministry this year as they have seen benefits from last year.
Health officers are closely monitoring homes that are selling tobaccos to ensure they have health stickers on their homes before they could be allowed to sell tobacco.
The Ministry along with related stakeholders are now working on imposing additional tax on tobacco this year because of its impacts on people’s health.
