Government to number houses and name all roads
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 10/01/2020
The Government is introducing a new project proposed from the Ministry of Tourism to number every house in Tonga with a mail box number and also to name all roads including the small ones in the rural areas.
Most of the roads in Tonga are already named but the Government is focusing on the small roads in the communities.
The Prime Minister Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says Tonga is trying to level up to international standards with the new introduced project and it will be implemented following the completion of the road maintenance project that’s currently underway.
Naming of all roads and numbering of houses will make transport easier and faster in Tonga and the Prime Minister says once it’s successful all postal mail will be delivered to each registered mail box throughout Tonga.
He adds in times of emergency such as a house fire, the fire officers will be able to be at the scene faster when specific details of address is provided rather than the current method where people mostly call and have to explain in detail how to get the area using trees and odd objects as markers of direction.
However, with the new project in place, the tourists will have an easier experience exploring around Tonga as directions would be much easier with formal addresses
Ministry of Tourism is still finalizing the paper work and the budget for the project.
