The Prime Minister Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says his government is working urgently to pay its fees to the United Nations – UN. The estimated amount to be paid is 16thousand US dollars.
Last weekend United Nations reported, Tonga is one of seven countries to lose their votes at the United Nations General Assembly because it hasn’t paid its fees.
The United Nations said the seven were so far behind in paying their dues that they are losing their voting privileges in the 193-member General Assembly.
The seven are Tonga, Venezuela, Lebanon, Lesotho, Gambia, Central Africa Republic and Yemen.
The UN Charter states a member of UN which is in arrears shall have no vote in the General Assembly if the amount of its arrears equals or exceeds the amount of contributions due from it for the preceding two years.
