The Ministry of Education and Training has announced new measures to help address the decline in the number of students passing their national Forms 5-7 examinations with a significant drop in the pass rate for all three levels in 2019, compared to 2018.
The Ministry of Education and Training is planning on hosting further trainings for Forms 5-7 level teachers beginning next week, with the aim to up skill the teachers in preparation of the new academic year.
In a press conference this morning the education minister – Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni said these trainings are for the teachers in government schools but they are inviting the teachers from the non-government schools as they cater for the majority of the students in Tonga.
The minister said the results of the past years national examinations were very concerning and so they are taking several initiatives to address this issue including looking at the lower levels beginning from Forms 1 to ensure that when the student reaches the fifth form, they have had a good foundation from the years before.
Sovaleni said they would also be looking at the primary school level, specifically the class 6 level because they are the students who will be transitioning to high school study and the ministry wants to ensure they are well prepared and adjusted when they move up in to high schools.
