Because of growing global concern regarding the spread of a new virus that has claimed 6 lives in China, the Ministry of Health is looking to address the issue as quickly as possible to ensure the safety and security of Tongan lives.
The Health Director – Dr. Siale ‘Akauola says they’ve received notice from the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network regarding the spread of this coronavirus, and are working on ensuring this virus does not reach our shores as well as warning Tongans traveling to or living in China to be more careful during this time.
The virus, which spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan, has infected almost 300 people, and six have died. The health director said they are still monitoring the situation as Tonga is at a low-risk right now but the best action the public can take now is to maintain a hygienic lifestyle.
There is concern that with the celebrations of the Chinese New Year, the multitude of travelers within China, into and out of China, could contribute to the virus rapidly spreading to other countries as there have been suspected and confirmed cases from other countries, including a case still being investigated in Brisbane, Australia.
