The misuse of social media by students in Tonga has impacted student’s performance in the classroom. This was one of the issues highlighted by the Education Minister last week.
In his remarks, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni says, information shared on social media platform – FACEBOOK affects relationship between students and their peers also between the teachers.
Sovaleni says, the concern is that social media has created barriers among students as well as teachers.
Siaosi says, many problems arise from posting information on FACEBOOK that degrades one’s social values and therefore, limits one’s ability to actively participate in classroom also leading to being absent from school.
Sovaleni says, technology is a good tool for communication however, students abusing social media especially FACEBOOK for their personal gain should not be tolerated.
However, Sovaleni says, this year – the Ministry will set up a social media policy to address the issue regarding the use of social media.
This was one of the issues raised by the Minister of Education at a special prayer service for all teachers of government schools in Tongatapu last week.
