Consultation underway in preparation for the new bridge

The Government officials held a consultation with the public last night with the residents of Folaha  as the it prepares for the construction of the bridge from ‘Umusii to Folaha.

The town officer, Lipieti Pahulu says the people are very excited for the project as it helps them gain easier and faster access to Nuku’alofa.

In December last year, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) together with the Government signed a Project Readiness Facility in preparation for two major transport sector projects in Tonga – including the upgrading of the Queen Salote International Wharf; and the Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge Project.

In September last year, Cabinet approved the Bridge crossing from Folaha to ‘Umusii in Ma’ufanga which supports Tonga’s Strategic Development Framework’s national outcome for a more reliable, safe and affordable transport services for Tonga and its people.

The PM last year requested for ADB’s consideration to work quickly on the contract awards and commissioning of the construction of the Fanga’uta Lagoon crossing bridge by early 2021 and added the project would promote economic growth.
