During the Prime Ministers meeting with the constituents of Tongatapu 6 – the issue of the government’s efforts to return the Tongan sports teams stranded in China was brought up by a concerned citizen.
Sepuloni ‘Alovili said he was representing the parents of the boxing team as he is a boxing coach and he accused the government of not doing enough to ensure the safe and swift return of the athletes still in China during this coronavirus outbreak.
The Acting Minister for Health who is also the Tongatapu 6 MP – Poasi Tei responded to ‘Alovili’s comments saying that there were two particular groups the government were focused on; the Tongans in Wuhan, and the sports teams from Tonga that are in China.
With four of Tongans in Wuhan taking up the opportunity from the New Zealand government to evacuate, while 3 decide to remain, Hon. Poasi Tei says they are still looking at solutions for the return of the sports teams as the 3 countries with direct flights to Tonga – Australia New Zealand and Fiji, have closed their borders to travelers from China.
The Acting Health Minister says they are looking at other routes out of China that the sports teams may take, but these are all still being discussed at the moment.
