The second group of Tongan athletes in China have arrived safely to the UK and as government are making arrangements for them, they are also concerned for the spread of misinformation on social media aimed at undermining the government’s efforts.
The Minister for Internal Affairs, responsible for Sports – Vatau Hui – confirmed this to Radio Tonga News this morning saying their officer from the ministry – Onetoto ‘Anisi who traveled to the UK to meet and assist the team, reported that the final group arrived early this morning and now begin their 14 days quarantine period before they can be cleared to return home.
The minister said the athletes continue to be monitored by Dr. Faka’osi Pifeleti during this time.
Hui also addressed the spread of false and misleading information on social media regarding this operation to evacuate the Tongan athletes from China. He said the government had put a lot of effort into this operation to ensure the safe return of the sports teams but these were diplomatic discussions between government and the British government and that comments shared online aimed at undermining the government’s efforts were all false.
The minister reassured that the athletes were being well cared for and the government will be covering all the costs to make sure the athletes are safe during their 14 days in self-isolation.
