Evacuation centers need to be more inclusive – Tonga Disability Association
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 20/02/2020
There is a need for more inclusive evacuation centers in Tonga to cater for people living with disabilities. A two day workshop held this week gathered related stakeholders to take a look at this issue and how it can be resolved.
Rhema Misa from the Tonga Disabilities Association says they are pushing for evacuation centers to be accessible for people with disabilities particularly those in wheelchairs as they are the most vulnerable in times of natural disasters, and it was evident in previous experiences that those in wheelchairs needed assistance from others to be able to access the evacuation centers.
Misa says there are approximately 1 thousand people in Tonga living with disabilities that need to be catered for in evacuation plans in time of natural disasters and they are hopeful this matter can be resolved promptly.
