With only a few days left in their 14-day quarantine period in the UK, the Tongan athletes evacuated from China are still in good health with no symptoms of the coronavirus.
Onetoto ‘Anisi from the Ministry of Internal Affairs who traveled to the UK together with ‘Ilaisipa ‘Alipate from Foreign Affairs to assist the sports teams in their return to Tonga, told Radio Tonga News the athletes are all faring well despite being confined to the hotel without visitors, and they are looking forward to completing their quarantine period and returning home to their families.
‘Anisi says all 51 of the sports teams – 8 officials and 43 athletes are in good spirits with the head of the team – Rev. Penisimani Vainikolo leading daily prayers with the teams and providing counsel for the athletes below the age of 16 in addition to the medical checkups provided by Dr. Faka’osi Pifeleti.
The sports teams are being cared for by the Tongan High Commissioner to the UK – Hon. Fanetupouvava’u Tu’ivakano and her staff together with the assistance of ‘Anisi and ‘Alipate. ‘Anisi says the High Commissioner has arranged some activities for the sports teams once they are allowed to leave the hotel, before they return to Tonga. The sports teams left China in 2 groups and first group to arrive in the UK will complete their quarantine period on Feb 29th and will be leaving for home on the 3rd of March with the 2nd group completing quarantine on the 2nd of March and expected to return on the 5th of March.
One of the heartwarming acts during the athletes’ quarantine is by the Tongans living in London who despite not being able to visit the team, have gone out of their way to visit the hotel and leave donations and gifts for the athletes at the front desk.
