The Ministry of Education and Training is concerned with the performance of each student in school this year. This is one of the missions of the ministry – to focus on improving educational outcomes including enabling students in their education to make a living after they complete their studies.
The Ministry is looking to work closely with the parents and the local communities to help them play a stronger role in the education of their children.
A Truancy Reconciliation and Engagement officer in the Ministry of Education – Kalafitoni Latu says an awareness program currently underway in the outer islands aimed to acknowledge to the town officers and parents’ high quality policy advice and build a stronger relationship between the ministry and the parents to push children for a better education.
Latu also talks about the operation of the ministry together with the Tonga Police in every morning at the bus station to make sure that students are not roaming around town but to make it to school on time.
Last week the ministry carried out work to 4 different constituencies in Tongatapu where they discovered15 students of school age who were not attending school, and they worked together with their parents and guardians encouraging them to attend school.
Similar program will be carried out in Vava’u, Ha’apai and the two Niuas.
