Cruise Ship docks at Vuna Wharf after 4 turned away before

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 28/02/2020

After 4 cruise ships were turned away earlier this month due to concerns about the spread of covid-19, Vuna Wharf today welcomed a cruise ship that the ministry of tourism assured was free of the coronavirus, with medical checks conducted on passengers and crew upon arrival.

Viliami Finaulahi from the tourism ministry said they had gone through the process of ensuring the passengers were clear from carrying the virus, working together with authorities where the cruise ship had made port before to verify that they were cleared at these ports too.

This cruise ship came from the United States and traveled through Fiji and the Cook Islands, carrying over a thousand passengers and about 6 hundred crew members on board.

The government had put in place protective measures to protect our borders from the importation of the coronavirus, and the Health minister earlier had announced that government would be closely monitoring cruise ships scheduled to arrive in Tonga.
