Mu’a GPS student wins Class 4 & 5 soroban competition

Viliami Filifonu of GPS Mu’a won the national soroban competition of classes’ 4 – 5 students for 2020 which was held at Queen Salote College Hall this morning.
More than 190 class 4 & 5 students took part in this morning’s program including students from the outer islands except the two Niuas.
In his opening remarks at the program, Japan’s Ambassador to Tonga – HE. Tetsuya Ishii says, the competition is important in helping improving mathematical skills of primary school students, especially with their calculations.
Meanwhile, Minister for Education – Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni encouraged participants to continue to help their fellow students improve their Mathematics using soroban.
The Minister and the Ambassador then presented prizes to the winners of each categories.
The winner of the written category will win a trip to Tokyo in August this year.
The soroban competition is held annually conducted by the Soroban Division of the Ministry of Education in partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency – JICA.
