Ministry of Education focus on improving students’ mathematics

Ministry of Education and Training are trying to improving the students’ performances in mathematics, through soroban, a Japanese abacus that lets skilled users make lightning-quick calculations of large groups of numbers with speeds that rival an electronic calculator
The Minister for Education and Training – Siaosi Sovaleni says the Ministry’s commitment to supporting soroban in schools together with the ongoing support of the Japanese Government and – International Soroban Diffusion Foundation, will help to strengthen students skills and capability in mathematics.
Sovaleni highlighted this during the soroban competition for classes’ 4-5 students yesterday emphasizing the importance of soroban for students’ mathematics skills and that it should be expanded for other levels as well.
He also urged the government school teachers to continue diligently teaching soroban to the students as this will help the students and the nation in the future.
This year marks the 43rd anniversary of the introduction of soroban to Tonga and the ministry of Education hopes the soroban competition and skills of the students will continue to grow and develop in the future.
