Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 27/03/2020
The Minister of Internal Affairs is urging the Tongans working under the Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme in New Zealand and the Seasonal worker’s program in Australia to follow the directives from the authorities in the countries they’re in.
Hon. Vatau Hui says, the more than one thousand Tongan workers in New Zealand under RSE scheme will not return home for about three months amid the coronavirus pandemic, and says their employers and relevant authorities are assisting them during their stay.
The ministry of Internal Affairs has been working closely with officials from Australia to extend the working visa of the more than 1,000 Tongan workers there, as New Zealand has done.
Hui says the latest update he’s received confirms the Tongan workers are all well and coping despite the circumstances.
New Zealand has declared a national lockdown as the number of confirmed cases have reached 368 this afternoon.
While Australia has imposed very tough restrictions with 2,793 confirmed cases.
