1-week nationwide lockdown to begin Sunday

The Prime Minister has declared a one week lock down for Tonga effective this Sunday.
Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says the national lockdown will be effective from 1am Sunday 29th of March to 1am Sunday 5th of April unless further renewed.
The lockdown aims for the people to stay at home, unless for the purpose of purchasing or supplying of essential consumer goods for their families.
A night time curfew will also apply from 8pm to 6am during the lockdown and will be enforced by officers from Tonga Police, His Majesty’s Armed Forces and relevant authorized officers.
All domestic public transportation will cease its operations.
Supermarkets and retail shops selling essential needs will still operate to cater for the needs of the people as well and essential services.
Funeral gathering shall be restricted to a total of 10 people indoors and 20 people outdoors with an authorized officer to be present.
Meanwhile the Health Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu says, the national lockdown was implemented to confirm Tonga’s current situation of coronavirus especially with those currently under quarantine.
