Despite the fact the TC Harold Category 4 did not hit Tonga directly on Thursday morning, but the strong winds and high tides destroyed 31 households in Tongatapu and ‘Eua.
The latest situation report from NEMO states 16 houses in Tongatapu were completely destroyed, 68 sustained major damages and 298 recorded only few damages.
Meanwhile on the island of ‘Eua, 15 houses were completely damaged, while about 31 houses were partially damaged.
The Government representative Sunia Havea says, the Nafanua Wharf has been completely destroyed as it was still under renovation for the national events scheduled to be held on the island but due to the coronavirus few changes have been made.
As the assessment team left the main island Tongatapu to ‘Eua yesterday, for surveying the damage recorded, the VOEA Neiafu was able to return the students to Tongatapu as the schools resumed this morning.
Another major damage was recorded on the island of Ha’apai, and the Prime Minister says during their visit yesterday, the wharf and the Holopeka road are damaged.
He adds work will be carried out soon to renovate the damage as most of the island’s main infrastructures were damaged earlier this year from TC Tino.
