Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 21/04/2020
More than 10 families are still using tents on the island of ‘Eua as shelters were completely destroyed by TC Harold earlier this month.
The Head of the MEIDECC Office in ‘Eua, Siale Tahaafe says, the victims of TC Harold urgently need drinking water and safer shelters as most of their resources were destroyed by the cyclone.
NEMO, Tonga Red Cross, MORDI Tonga and Caritas Tonga have distributed assistance to the affected families since last week.
As the affected families are coping with the impacts of the cyclone, the Ministry of Health is concerned about their way of living as Tonga is still under restrictions due to COVID-19.
Chief Public Health Inspector Sela Fa’u hopes the victims are still practicing hygienic lifestyle and keeping the social distancing despite the challenges they face.
On the 9th of April TC Harold made landfall and destroyed households and properties on the low lying areas of Tongatapu and ‘Eua.
Last week the Finance Minister says the estimated cost of damage recorded on the island of ‘Eua is at 40 million pa’anga, he also mentions that Government will assist the sectors affected by the cyclone.
