The immediate relief assistance distributed by Government and stakeholders to the affected families of TC Harold was completed yesterday afternoon.
The assistance included tents and hygienic kits for the victims in Tongatapu and ‘Eua.
The CEO of MEIDECC Paula Ma’u says the result from the immediate damage assessment shows 982 households were affected, including 41 that were completely destroyed, some had major damage but most only sustained minor damage.
Some people are still living in tents and Ma’u says, those are just temporary shelters and government is still discussing ways to rebuild the affected households as the reconstruction of houses damaged by TC Gita 2018 has yet to be completed.
He also adds, the Government will now look at ensuring the victims of TC Harold have access to safe drinking water and sufficient food supplies, this included installing water tanks for these families.
As the survey on the impacts have completed, Ma’u says the estimated cost of damage on buildings ONLY is at eight million pa’anga but the cost of revenue loss and from the damaged resorts on the Western side and ‘Eua will be millions.
Ma’u also acknowledged the support from NEMO, Caritas Tonga, MORDI Tonga, Tonga Red Cross and Tonga Youth Council since the 9th of April in distributing assistance.
