Cost of damage from TC Harold estimated at TOP$260million

Following weeks of surveys and assessments on the damage recorded from TC Harold earlier this month, the Government says the cost of damage is at 260 million pa’anga.
The Finance Minister Hon. Tevita Lavemaau says, there will be meetings with donor partners seeking ways to financially assist Tonga during the recovery period.
Lavemaau says, the country is facing difficult times, as most people are affected from the restrictions imposed due to coronavirus and now many families were badly affected when TC Harold made landfall leaving many jobless and homeless.
No specific timeframe was given of when the reconstruction of damaged houses will begin, but the Minister says they are trying to complete the reconstruction of houses damaged by Gita in 2018.
TC Harold destroyed homes, resorts and infrastructures leaving many people without proper shelters.
More than 900 households were affected with 41 badly impacted, the officials are asking the people especially the victims to use whatever resources available to practice hygienic lifestyle as Tonga is still under restrictions.
