One person currently quarantined at Taliai Camp

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 24/04/2020

Health officials had ordered to quarantine one passenger at the Taliai camp after failing to complete requirements from New Zealand Government in order to arrive at the border.

Health Minister Hon. Dr ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu says, the person was meant to return to New Zealand yesterday afternoon on the Air New Zealand flight but could not, due to incomplete paper work.

She adds, the passenger is not a suspected case of COVID-19 but he had to be quarantined because he already made close contacts with the crew inside the plane.

The decision is just a precautionary measure and it is not yet determined how long the passenger will be at Taliai camp, but last month, quarantine cases were in isolation for 14 days.

Chief Public Health Inspector Sela Fa’u says, Tonga’s latest travel advisory requires all crew members to wear protective masks upon arrival and they are allowed to leave the plane while in Tonga. They must also ensure they are COVID-19 free and all contacts with local authority will be made via internet.
