Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 29/04/2020
The Ministry for Foods is trying to encourage the consumption of local meat products and decreasing dependency on imported meat products, as the ministry records a rise in the number of complaints they’ve received regarding expired meat products from abroad.
The CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture, Foods, and Fisheries – Dr. Viliami Manu says they are implementing a poultry farming project aimed at reducing reliance on imported meat products.
The Public Health Inspector – Sela Fa’u expressed support for the initiative as local food products are healthier and the consumption of imported meat products contribute to rising NCD cases in Tonga.
Already the ministry is distributing chickens, pigs, and goats to the public to promote consumption of local foods instead of unhealthy imported food products.
